Security forces launch manhunt as assault on Mopol base raises fresh concerns over rising armed attacks in North-Central Nigeria
Suspected armed attackers have stormed a Police Mobile Force (PMF) camp in Kwara State, killing three officers and injuring two others in a late-night assault, security sources have confirmed.
The attack reportedly occurred at a remote police facility in the state, where officers were on duty when the assailants struck, opening fire on personnel and engaging in a brief exchange before overpowering the security post.
According to preliminary reports, the attackers operated in large numbers and used sophisticated weapons, overwhelming the camp’s defensive response before retreating from the scene.
The injured officers were immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue pending official identification and notification of families.
Security operatives have since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, with additional deployments made to nearby communities to prevent further attacks and track the movement of the armed group.
Authorities are yet to officially confirm the motive behind the assault, but the incident adds to a growing pattern of attacks on security formations across parts of Nigeria’s North-Central region, where armed groups have increasingly targeted police and military installations.
Efforts to reach police spokespersons for detailed comments were ongoing at the time of filing this report.
The attack underscores rising security concerns in Kwara and neighbouring states, as authorities intensify operations to curb armed violence targeting security personnel and facilities.
