At least five suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including a medical officer and alleged Improvised Explosive Device (IED) specialists, have reportedly been killed in a premature explosion in Borno State.
The incident occurred while the suspected terrorists were reportedly involved in the production or handling of explosives at an ISWAP location in the state.
According to reports citing security sources, those killed included an individual identified as Usman Dan Fulani, described as an ISWAP medical officer, as well as IED specialists believed to have been involved in the group’s bomb-making operations. Two of the specialists were reportedly foreign nationals of Arab origin.
Explosion reportedly occurred during bomb-making operation
The explosion is believed to have occurred while the suspected terrorists were handling explosive materials.
Premature detonations have previously caused casualties among insurgents attempting to manufacture or assemble IEDs, particularly in areas where terrorist groups maintain bomb-making facilities.
The latest incident reportedly resulted in the deaths of five suspected ISWAP members.
Foreign IED specialists reportedly among those killed
Security reports indicated that foreign Arab technicians were among those affected by the explosion.
Their reported presence highlights the technical expertise that terrorist groups have sought to develop or obtain for the production of explosives and IEDs.
