A Kaduna woman identified as Mama Mary was reportedly killed by bandits after her family failed to meet a N10 million ransom demand for her release.
The allegation was disclosed by security analyst and former governorship aide Reuben Buhari, who reportedly recounted the incident in a Facebook post.
According to the account, the woman had been abducted in Kaduna State and remained in the custody of her abductors after her family was unable to raise the demanded ransom.
She was subsequently reported to have been killed by the kidnappers.
Buhari said the victim had spoken about the plight of displaced people in her community, Kateri, approximately 13 days before her abduction.
The reported killing highlights the continuing danger faced by residents in parts of Kaduna State, where kidnapping and banditry have remained major security concerns.
Ransom demands have become a recurring feature of kidnapping cases across parts of northern Nigeria, placing enormous financial pressure on families attempting to secure the release of abducted relatives.
In some cases, families are forced to seek assistance from relatives, friends and community members to raise money demanded by criminal groups.
Where the money cannot be raised, victims can face prolonged captivity and, in the most tragic circumstances, death.
The reported death of Mama Mary has therefore renewed concerns about the vulnerability of civilians in communities affected by armed criminal groups and the difficulty families face when confronted with ransom demands.
